Humor and News Tops List of Emails Shared
The top types of email shared? Humor, followed by News. Adding a brand message to the email slightly reduces the chance of sharing. Over 40 percent of respondents stated they are more or slightly more likely to send marketing-related messages. Only 5 percent stated they refuse to share content that contains a brand message.
So, roll out the jokes, folks, burn a news feed and get your brand out there. Perhaps a blend of daily jokes and world news would be a workable format, with a sedate logo as watermark or a small text ad included in the body of the email.
Provide a quality service and your largesse will be returned to you. I love the way the world works sometimes.

Rich Media Debuts on Google
Now every free web page (sans content) may look like an escapee from a paid to promote program, complete with flashing banners, fly/float/slide/slip in ads, popups and popunders. I have a feeling I will be very happy to have a high-speed Internet connection, so that I may speed through the advertising mine field.
Any innovation in advertising will eventually translate to more revenue for publishers and more free services like TV, music and gaming downloads for Internet users. This is a good thing.
The downside? Media measurement gurus will now have to conduct studies to determine the rich media format that is the most effective. The guineau pigs? You and me. Get ready for some framebreakers on your favorite traffic exchaanage and some x-rated oops ads on your site.

To Diet or Not to Diet? Turn to Science for Answer
What is intriguing is the shift in interest from low-carb and fad diets to more scientific and balanced approaches, as indicated by the top search terms for the Health & Medical - Wellbeing Category.
Sites showing the biggest increases in market share during that period were:
* Spark People, up 148 percent
* Nutrisystem, up 130 percent
* Jenny Craig, up 40 percent
Visits to The Biggest Loser Club increased by 69 percent for the week ending Dec. 31, 2005 versus the previous week.
Hitwise Search Intelligence data suggest that this year's dieters are interested in a more scientific, balanced approach to dieting and fitness.
The share of Internet searches for glycemic index, body mass index and weight training were up 161 percent, 67 percent, and 61 percent respectively, for the week ending Dec. 31, 2005 versus the week ending Jan. 1, 2005.
In the same time period, searches for atkins diet and south beach diet were down by 12 percent and 36 percent respectively.
Could it be that we, as a nation, are becoming smarter as well as thinner? Maybe we finally realize that there is no magic fat-burning pill and there certainly is no fat-free lunch.

Advertising and Marketing Success
Sponsored search text ads on Yahoo! have been reduced to 70 characters, which is a step toward industry standardization. This will allow you to manage keyword buys more easily, compare results across engines, and create ads that are more in line with consumer behaviors.
Design your advertisments for maximum engagement across multiple media platforms, from video-on-demand and satellite radio to search engines, video blogs and wireless text messaging.
According to a report released recently by the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), advertisers in the U.S. and Canada spent $5.75 billion on Search Engine Marketing (SEM) in 2005, a 44 percent increase over 2004 spending.
Consumers want to feel special and in control of their advertising experience. When they feel included and empowered, they are more likely to buy.
Integrate advertising. Extend your online marketing to your physical store. Invite visitors in your store to shop online. Drive traffic to a contest on your website using print ads. Place a magnetic sign on your car door with URL of your website. Feature your chatroom on a blog post. Wear your website address on your t-shirt.
Visit Advertiing For Success blog and view my post on Multiple Intelligences. Everything you do online and offline is related to everything else you do. No one is going to make the connection for your customer if you do not.

Emotional Marketing Does Not Work
A study on advertising covering a range of products, from food to technology, found that these ads, while usually memorable, do not increase buying behavior or increase market share.
Leslie Picot-Zane, founder of The Center for Emotional Marketing:
It's like going to a restaurant with a fabulous ambience and enticing aroma, but the food never comes... They've put you in the mood, but they never give you anything to sink your teeth into.
Well, I hope the mood marketing idea works out.
