WARNING I am an old woman now ....

5 comments:

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves

And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired.
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells.
And run my stick along the public railings.
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain.
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens . . .
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised

When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Google Widget for AdSense

2 comments:
In its latest attempt to lure brand marketers back to the AdSense network, Google has introduced a rich-media, dynamic ad unit. Google is touting the value of this rich-media experience coupled with the contextual targeting capabilities of its AdSense network.

I may try the AdSense widget on one of my blogs. I had removed all Google ads because they were causing my blog to load slowly. The widget will be on the sidebar, which loads last.

Stop Violence Against Women and Girls

4 comments:
Stop Violence Against Women and Girls

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious human rights and public health issue, one that affects women and girls of all ages worldwide.

Forms of Violence:
  • rape
  • domestic violence
  • forced marriage
  • exploitation and harassment
  • sexual slavery
  • forced prostitution
  • human trafficking
  • genital mutilation
In Darfur, the women leave the refuge camps to work in the fields or gather firewood to sell to help support their families, only to be raped by armed gangs. They are then shunned by the community and have lost value as a bride. For this reason, many of the rapes go unreported.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of women are murdered by their families each year in the name of family honor. These killings happen in Bangladesh, Great Britain, Brazil, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Pakistan, Morocco, Sweden, Turkey and Uganda, according to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

While no teaching in the Koran advocates or condones honor killings, the view of women as property without rights is deeply rooted in Islamic culture. Rape, infidelity, premarital sex, flirting, or even failing to serve a meal on time are cause enough to die.

The practice of honor killing was condoned under fundamentalist Taliban government in Afghanistan, and has been reported in Iraq and Iran.

Many women and young girls in Iraq are denied the right to choose their marriage partner freely, and those who oppose forced marriage are at risk of violence or even of being killed.

According to the United Nations Children's Fund, 5,000+ brides in India are killed each year because their dowries are considered insufficient.

In Jordan, if a woman is afraid that her family wants to kill her, she can check herself into the local prison. But the only person who can get her out is a male relative!

In Pakistan, it is estimated at least three women—including victims of rape—die in the name of family honor daily.

Under Saddam Hussein, women in Iraq who were deemed to be political activists, relatives of activists, or members of certain ethnic or religious groups, were subjected to rape and other forms of sexual violence.

Crimes of passion are treated extremely leniently in Latin America and other patriarchal societies.

During the World Cup Soccer Game in 2006, thousands of women and girls were trafficked into Germany and forced into prostitution.

In many cultures, during conflict situations where husbands are killed, it is extremely common for the women to be forced to marry a brother or a father of the deceased husband. It is also common that girls (10-12 years old) are also forced into marriage for economic reasons.

Female genital mutilation, also called female circumcision, involves partial or total removal of the external female genitalia. The most common type of female genital mutilation is excision of the clitoris and the labia minora, accounting for up to 80 percent of all cases. In cultures where it is an accepted practice, female genital mutilation is practiced by followers of all religious beliefs as well as animists and non believers.

If you live in the United States, please sign the petition asking Congress to make violence against women a top priority in our foreign policy and humanitarian assistance throughout the world.

Click banner below to sign the petition before September 30,
when it will be submitted to Congress.

Rape is a WMD. Sign petition to stop it
Rape in the USA is a Major Problem, Too!

Every two and a half minutes in America, someone is sexually assaulted. One in six American women are victims of sexual assault, and one in 33 men. In 2004-2005, there were an average annual 200,780 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. About 44 percent of rape victims are under age 18, and 80 percent are under age 30. Rapists are not hiding in the bushes or in the shadows, because almost two-thirds of all rapes were committed by someone who is known to the victim.
  • 73 percent of sexual assaults were perpetrated by a non-stranger,
  • 38 percent of perpetrators were a friend or acquaintance of the victim,
  • 28 percent were an intimate , and
  • 7 percent were another relative (National Crime Victimization Survey, 2005).

Microsoft May Lose Marketshare

No comments:
I love this. Free enterprise is bringing alternatives to Microsoft Office, which has held market share for far too long. When Microsoft introduced the operating system, Windows Vista, glossing over that you would need all new Office software to use it. I decided I would look for alternatives to all of Microsoft products.

It looks like Yahoo!, Google and IBM are going to be offering free software comparable to Office, online, where you may access it from anywhere via the Internet, whether you use a PC or MAC.

Yahoo Acquires Zimbra Open Source Email & Collaborative Software for $350 Million
It’s time for Yahoo! to step up and win some recognition back in the mail, asp and planning segment, and the acquisition of Zimbra, a university and 2.0 darling is a successful step.

Today, IBM plans to post on the Internet a package of its own software with applications that square off against components of Microsoft's ubiquitous Office suite -- a word processor to rival Word, a spreadsheet to go up against Excel and business-presentation software as an alternative to PowerPoint.

Halloween is my favorite holiday!

Finally, a use for your bridesmaid dresses!

Always start with what you have. Most of us have at least one bridesmaid dress that we never wear anywhere. Drag it out of the plastic bag and see what you can make. Above is a simple sleeveless sheath. The cape can be part of another dress or buy a long piece of cloth and wrap it around your waist. Attach the cape to your arms via jewelry or ribbons. You may either make the headpiece with beads, tinsel and ribbon or buy a wig to wear. Remember the makeup! Cleopatra had some heavy eye liner.

Do you like costumes? Would you like to enter an Online Halloween Costume Contest? StarCostumes and Voodoo Music Experience (VME) are holding a costume contest with some fine prizes.

Get your creativity flowing, and design, photograph and display your most outrageous costume. This would be the contest you will wear to the 2007 VME event in New Orleans on Halloween weekend! That is the first prize!

One winner will be chosen by StarCostumes from the top 50 entries. This winner will win two three-day passes, $1000 for travel and expenses, $100 credit at Star Costumes and you will be featured on their site.

The 2007 Voodoo Music Experience bands include Rage Against the Machine, The Smashing Pumpkins, Wilco, Kings of Leon, Dr. John, The Black Crowes, Toots and the Maytals and many others. This will be a weekend full of fun.

It is easy to enter. Just include in your photo description or video why StarCostumes should select you as the VME winner! Begging not allowed...LOL

After you post your costume and tell them why you should win the Grand Prize, have all your friends vote for your entry.

Are You Stuck on One Search Engine?

2 comments:
Research Brief » Blog Archive » Top Web Sites Keep Visitors But Overlap Service - read article

From the article:
A new release from Nielsen//NetRatings announced that, among the three key Web categories, search providers had the highest visitor retention rates, with an average of 71 percent of June visitors at home returning in July. Google Search led, followed by Yahoo! Search, and MSN/Windows Live Search. Visitor retention rates were slightly higher among the work audience.
For complete information, view the press release at nielsen-netratings.com.

My thoughts: I think search engine used depends on your browser and your options.

With Internet Explorer, you have a home page and that is usually keyed to the webmail service you use. You are basically trapped unless you have bookmarked other search engines.

If you use FireFox, you have the ability to add multitudes of search engines to your browser as add-ons. I tend to use specific search engines for different tasks. If I use Yahoo! and do not get the answer in the first few results, I switch to Google; if I am still not happy, I go to Ask. I never use MSN. If I am looking for definitions, I use Webster; if looking for a movie, I use IMDB; and for news I use BBC. Other options include Technorati, Del.icio.us, Weather.com, Amazon, eBay and Lonely Planet Online.

I love having choices. What browser do you use? Which search engines?

Stop Lunatic Web Content Crazes!

No comments:
Mark Simon is VP-industry relations for New York search-engine-marketing firm Didit. He also works closely with industry organizations such as the IAB, Shop.org and the DMA. He joined the company in 2004 as director of sales.

With that said, Mr. Simon showed his ignorance in this article in Advertising Age - CMO Strategy - Ditch the Lunatic Web Content Crazes

Here is his list of WCCs. Yes, he did write the titles below in all caps. I guess you learn to scream to be heard when you are this self-serving and WRONG about your chosen profession.

1. ANYTHING HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH VIRTUAL REALITY.

2. ANYTHING HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE PHONY-RECOMMENDATION INDUSTRY.

3. "SMART ADS" THAT AREN'T SO SMART.

4. "SEARCHLESS" ADVERTISING.

5. AUDIO-RELIANT VIDEO PRE-ROLL SPOTS.

6. "HUMAN-POWERED" SEARCH ENGINES.

7. KNEE-JERK ALGORITHMIC MEDIA BUYING.

8. BEHAVIORAL TARGETING THAT GOES TOO FAR.

9. TWITTER AND ITS MICROBLOGGING ILK.

10. INTRUSIVE MOBILE MARKETING.

The only one I would probably agree with is number 6, human-powered search engines, like Mahalo.

The one that really makes me angry is number 2, phony recommendation industry:
Do marketers seriously believe consumers are going to be gullible enough to believe product recommendations from people who are being paid to recommend the products? Of course not. And yet a sneaky, stealthy form of word-of-mouth advertising called "pay per post" is based on exactly this proposition.
Wake up, Mr. Simon and realize that all the business as usual advertising methods you employed in the past have been replaced by word of mouth marketing, behavioral targeting that can tell if Mr. or Mrs. is on the computer, algorithms that rule your SEM world, virtual worlds that are worth more than your company, and Twitter! LOL

MyLifeBits : Microsoft Covets Your Life

3 comments:
Well, it you were worried about your personal information being spread all of the Internet, do not worry any longer. You will be able to document every waking moment of your life. If your life is a bit risque, you can blur the edges or store your memories in an offshore facility. Fantasy? Unfortunately, no.

Microsoft want to digitize, categorize, annotate, link, collect and save your life. You may visit the web page, MyLifeBits Demo, and watch videos that demonstrate how you may use MyLifeBits. Too much information can be a terrible burden, I guess.

I recognize the usefulness of this application for organizing and annotating photographs for the purposes of genealogy, family life stories and travel documentaries. However, to think that we want to save every email, record every phone call, archive all our websites, and preserve our personal calendars forever is the ultimate in hubris, even for Bill Gates.

Think about it. If you are on spring break in college, do you really need every picture and video saved for prosperity. "Yes, honey, this is mommy doing body shots off the abdomen of her best friend. This was just before they shot the Girls Gone Wild video. Would you like to see that? Oh, I wonder how that got linked to the video of your home birth! Oh well . . . "

There are some things best forgotten. I guess it could help Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan keep track of their DUIs, jail terms and lawyers. I shudder to think about what a disgruntled ex-employee to the rich and famous could do with this tool. Do we really need this?

They should have used the Camtasia or PowerPoint for the demo. The written explanations and the quick and silent movies are disjointed and hard to follow. So, I guess our little bits o' life are safe for now.

Marketers would love to find the places where they may reach 18-34 year old men. This is an elusive demographic that comprises 27 percent of total male Internet users; 23.1 million US men age 18 to 34 use the Internet.

Where Can You Find Guys Online? - eMarketer - link to complete article

From the article:
Men are more likely than women to use the Internet as a destination for recreation . . . more likely to gather material for their hobbies, read online for pleasure, take informal classes, participate in sports fantasy leagues, download music and videos, remix files and listen to radio. Men are more interested than women in technology, and they are also more tech savvy.

eBay Tries Behavioral Targeting

No comments:
This is an article about eBay's AdChoice deploying behavioral targeting while respecting privacy, maintaining transparency and using opt-out marketing. This could be a case study on how to use behavioral targeting.

From the article:
THE WORLD'S BIGGEST ONLINE AUCTION house knows a lot about its users' bidding, browsing and buying habits, and now eBay is leveraging this knowledge in behavioral ad targeting both on and off the site. In addition to serving ads to active buyers within eBay, the company buys inventory elsewhere. Pocket Fisherman Fun

5 comments:
My husband came home so excited yesterday. "I found one, I found one!" He pulls out this box, about the size of saltine box and rips it open.

I asked, "What is it?" He happily replied, "I found a pocket fishermen." He has wanted one forever, but they are hard to find. This is something that Ronco made before they started with the slice and dice.

I must admit it is pretty cool. The rod folds up and there is fishing tackle in the handle. I said, "Well, I am glad you found one. I hope you use it, " He grinned, "I will." I almost expected to find him in his fishing vest and hat.

I walked into the bedroom last night and felt something hit my leg. I looked down and did not see a thing. Then I looked up at Michael. He had that pocket fisherman out and he was practicing casting into the recycle box! I just giggled and walked out. Next time I came in, he had a catnip toy tied to the end of the line and was baiting the cat with it. LOL
