Let the people return home

During the worst housing crisis in New Orleans history, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is pushing to demolish thousands of units of affordable housing. They plan to rebuild only a few. If we let HUD do this, the majority of affordable public housing in the city will be eliminated. This will keep thousands of low-income Katrina survivors from ever returning home.

I joined ColorOfChange.org in calling on the city council to vote against these reckless and premature demolitions and insist on a fair redevelopment plan. I also sent a message to President Bush, calling on him to stop HUD from carrying out its plan. Let the people return home.

That's sad. I am sorry to hear about that. I hope you win the battle against these arbitrary acts.

@Aurelius Tjin-If everyone will take action, we can stop this travesty.

That is so awful. Where my Gram lives in rural Maine there are several relocated families that were Katrina victims. In MAINE?!? No surprise, they are having trouble adjusting. Talk about culture and weather trauma, plus it's not like there are any more jobs and opportunities then they had before. I truly hope that anyone who wants to go home can go home.

The days and weeks immediately following the storm were so tragically mis-handled that I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that ineptitude still reigns. I am, though. You would think our public servants would go full-out trying to help with recovery, but they continue to bumble and stumble and slap the citizens of New Orleans in the face. So very, very sad!

@tina-The survivors of Katrina are spread all over the USA. They should be able to go home.

@skeet-The shame of it will be what we remember.

@vaporizers-Please take action.

@heartworm-I do not think the government cares.
