Singer and bass guitarist Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland rose to the top of rock. Their first album won eight Platinum records in the USA. But then The Police disbanded in the mid-1980s.

In 2007, The Police reunited to perform at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. They delighted fans when they announced they would be touring together as The Police and playing at the Live Earth concert in July 2007. Have you seen the new police cd? It is a compilation of 28 songs, the biggest hits from five original studio albums. It is being released at the launch of their world tour.

I love The Police. One of my favorite songs is Invisible Sun, and it is on the new police cd. Invisible Sun is about the conflict between the British and the Irish and has always struck a chord with me.

Invisible Sun

(One, two, three, four, five, six Oh oh oh oh oh oh)

I don't want to spend the rest of my life
Looking at the barrel of an Armalite
I don't want to spend the rest of my days
Keeping out of trouble like the soldiers say
I don't want to spend my time in hell
Looking at the walls of a prison cell
I don't ever want to play the part
Of a statistic on a government chart

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

It's dark all day and it glows all night
Factory smoke and acetylene light
I face the day with me head caved in
Looking like something that the cat brought in

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

And they're only going to change this place
By killing everybody in the human race
They would kill me for a cigarette
But I don't even wanna die just yet

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

(Oh oh oh oh oh oh...)

You must remember that this song was sung during the 1980s, when music was in transition, from acid rock to reggae to pop to heavy metal. Only a few bands sang songs about political strife and a world in crisis. The Police was one of these bands. I believe they influenced many with their special mix of reggae-punk-rock. Certainly their songs have remained hits and may still be heard on the radio today.
