Crazy Postie Adventure in Chicago
Watch this short video about Robyn Nykaza and her quest in minus 9 degree weather to win HP products and $1000 cash. She had a limited amount of time to find and photograph certain objects and complete certain tasks, like making a snow angel (the ground was frozen solid).
My favorite part of the video is where the man asks her "What are you doing?" Robyn talks him into singing a Chicago-style Christmas carol and kissing her under the mistletoe. He was a complete stranger that was caught up in the Postie adventure.
Down to the wire, Robyn decides she must write "I Love HP" on her forehead with magic marker for the final points that she needs to win. She had expressed an opinion earlier that she would rather win without having to do that task. Now her sweet face with I LOVE HP is all over the PPP site.
Did she take home the prizes? Yes. An HP camera, printer, memory card, photograph paper, and $1000! Merry Christmas, Robyn. You deserve to win!

The Challenges of the Third Screen
Film schools across the nation are adding classes on how to write and produce video for mobile devices. The Sundance Institute has commissioned five independent directors to produce films for mobile phones. Robert Redford, of the Sundance Institute, said that he hoped to see the return of the short film. There are more limitations than just screen size when filming for mobile devices. Nightshots and wide angle shots do not work. Details usually visible on regular TV are easily lost on the third screen.
Advertisers will have to get creative to blend with this new genre of film. The future of mobile video is uncertain. Millions of video-capable cell phones are sold, but only 2.5 percent of subscribers watch videos on their phones. Most cell phone companies offer a package including video; but the price, starting at $15 per month, is too high for most cell phone users.
Cell phone providers are under pressure to make the mobile TV more appealing and less costly to consumers. They will have to do it while investing billions of dollars to make advanced video viewing a reality on the third screen. Advertising-supported mobisodes are one solution.
How to sell and incorporate advertising on the third screen is the real challenge. There have been forays into freebies-for-watching advertising, incorporating short branding spots, and automatic insertion of advertising based upon viewing interests. What is next? Behavioral targeting based on retail price of mobile device used? Pay per view? Only on a SmartPhone?

5 NASCAR channels from DirecTV and Hotpass
DirecTV Hotpass service will launch five Nascar channels next month for the 2007 season. Each channel will be dedicated to one driver each week, and the team sponsor will have exclusive logo space throughout the race.
During the local channel breaks, the team sponsor will have a one-minute spot for team-related news or sponsor-driven advertising. The channels will have a dedicated pair of announcers that will focus their commentary specifically on the channel driver.
Hotpass will give DirecTV a taste of consumer-generated input by allowing fans to vote for their favorite driver, which, in turn, will determine which driver gets their own channel. Wowsers! What a way to grab some attention, DirecTV!

Merry Video, Happy Gaming

(December 2) Well it has been a Video and Gaming Holiday season, with PlayStation 3 and Wii game systems selling out across the country, people camping overnight to buy a two or three PS3s so they could auction one on eBay. Poor scheduling and distribution problems haunted both systems. Microsoft estimates it will have shipped 10 million Xbox 360s by the end of year. Nintendo claims 600,000 gaming units sold in the USA. Sony may have sold around 200,000 PS3s.
Final figures for November
(December 16) According to a new report from NPD Group, almost $9 billion in hardware, software and accessories have been sold this year, increasing 69 percent, 7 percent and 10 percent over November 2005. Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3 systems are credited with a whopping 103 percent increase in console sales over last year.
According to Adverting Age
Nintendo sold 476,000 Wii consoles, while Sony sold 197,000 PS3s, according to NPD. Nintendo has said it has shipped 600,000 devices and plans several million by the end of the year. Sony continues to be beset by delays and has stopped commenting on the current season, but reiterated that it plans to have six million PS3s worldwide by the end of March 2007.Game Sales Increasing
The Wii game, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, was third behind Gears of War and PS2's Final Fantasy in software sales.So. . . ho-ho-ho, if you do not have a game system wrapped and under the tree, you may be in for some Christmas whining. (I always ask if they want some cheese with that whine...)

James Kim Found

James Kim was discovered on Wednesday December 6 at 12:30 PM. This was two days after his wife and two daughters were rescued from their car. Kim had set out on foot over the weekend to find help for his family. By the end of his journey, he had covered over 10 miles in the snow and cold, wearing sneakers and a light jacket.
Kim, 35, was a senior editor for the technology media company CNET Networks Inc.
See this moving tribute to James Kim from CNET.
He was a man trying to save his family and will be remembered as the hero he was. God bless and be with his family during this difficult time. May we all be as strong as this man when we need to help ourselves and our loved ones.
